Some people’s charity is like an indulgence in the days of Martin Luther.
The same way some people purchased indulgences to feel as though a sin will be forgiven, is the same way some people believe acts of charity or philanthropy will cover their wrong doings. The difference, indulgences were explicitly religious, whereas charity and philanthropy need no religion attached.
It’s a cover or a distraction from their own perceived moral failures.
