Because of increased public awareness, most people today believe that driving an automobile while intoxicated is self-destructive and dangerous to others. Thirty years ago, it would have been much more difficult to cross family lines because the prevailing wisdom about drinking and driving was quite different. Characters in films played by Cary Grant, W.C. Fields, and many others were funny and even endearing when drunk. They were certainly not self-destructive or dangerous. This is an example of how the right kind of information can lead to effective problem solving. With education about the effects of alcohol on one’s capacity to operate a motor vehicle comes an increased willingness to challenge the self-destructive wishes of people we care about, even if it means speaking out.
