Many of us have received the message that our moods are a private affair that should be handled alone or within the family unit. Advice such as “cheer up”, “it will pass with time”, “you just need a drink”, or “look on the bright side” are old-fashioned ideas about how to handle depression. Stoic silence is yet another outdated way to deal with depression.
