Other studies have found that elderly people with depression fared worse in recovering from heart attack, hip fracture, and severe infections like pneumonia, and they had more difficulty regaining functions like walking after being stricken by diseases of all kinds. Some research even suggests that prolonged depression interferes with the functioning of the immune system. Moreover, slowed recovery from all of these medical problems can worsen the depression. In short, untreated depression in the elderly results in much more than emotional suffering.
