Part of the problem is that until recently, information on depression and suicide for children before puberty was not available. It was widely believed that childhood depression didn’t exist. Many medical and even mental health professionals assumed that children had only short-lived bad moods but could not experience clinical depression. Recent research however, has revealed that in the United States, between 3 and 6 million people under the age of eighteen suffer from clinical depression and more than 2,000 children between the ages of five and fourteen commit suicide each year.
