Misconceptions of Depression Actions

Although many of these same feelings and reactions can arise if a partner has a heart attack or a chronic illness, depression tends to be harder to confront because we feel angry about it, as though it is a willful or purposeful thing that a loved one does to us. We wonder whether our partner is “getting back” at us for some past wrong doing. We also worry about what others will think if we reveal that our partner is depressed…

Many of the misconceptions about depression come from a general ignorance about what depression is. Depression is not willful. Depression is not a way that someone gets back at us. And it does not mean that someone is crazy.
