Hardly the Material For Historical Writing

The Exodus did not enter the annals of American History in the late nineteenth century because its protagonists were ordinary, rural folk, hardly the material for historical writing as conceived of at that time. Worse, their movement could point to no one famous leader nor boast of meticulous planning or hardy self-reliance.
