As an original stimulus to the Exodus, the role of drummers was negligible; at most, they may have helped keep the Exodus going. Terrorism and poverty lay at the root of the Exodus, and a Black Mississippian identified them as the reputed emigration agents: “The National government has stood idly by and refused to protect us against lawlessness, and to-day the blood of 500 innocent colored martyrs calls from the ground and arouses us to action. These are the ‘agents’ and ‘free homes’.”25
