Unknown – Racist Explanations

“[The Exodus] started among the black people themselves, how or when nobody knows, and the negroes keep their own counsel about it. Persons of limited intelligence are often not unlike unreasoning animals in the way of following blindly on a given direction in which they have been started, like a flock of sheep jumping over a fence. The migration of the blacks having begun, it is not easy to tell where it will end. Something much like a panic seems to have set in.”9
