Nell Irvin Painter – Election Violence

Democrats intended first to isolate Black Republicans, then paralyze them politically. Through intimidation and inducement they lured white Republicans into the Democratic ranks; nightriding and assassination effectively eliminated Black Republican opposition. Tensas, Natchitoches, Caddo, St. Mary, Ouachita, Concordia, and Point Coupée parishes all witnessed lawlessness and election irregularities in 1878.
