Taking nineteenth-century Euro-American respectability as its model, the [United Color] Links set out to duplicate it as closely as possible. Success, in its view, would come with material wealth and cultural assimilation. While the organization ultimately aimed at closing the gap between Blacks and whites, it was doomed to failure because it neither redefined the terms of success (especially culturally) nor attracted individuals who were already successful. Respectability and membership in the Links were mutually exclusive.
