Nell Irvin Painter on William Murrell

Blacks like William Murrell of Delta, Louisiana, repudiated entirely the concept of the paternalistic better class of whites. He claimed that the bulldozers very existence depended directly on upper-class white backing. Rich whites instigated the terrorism that they claimed to witness in utter helplessness, Murrell charged, and they actually employed nightriders as mercenaries, who in turn made their living policing the colored people.
