Nell Irvin Painter on The Black Codes

The Black Codes provided for property ownership, the ability to make contracts, use of the courts, and legal marriages. But at their core was a set of regulations that tightly constrained Blacks as wage workers. There were provisions for punishing vagrancy and for arranging apprenticeships.
